In 2014, roughly 21.5 million people over the age of 12 had a substance use disorder in the past year, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Alcohol abuse affected 17 million people and illicit drug use 7.1 million, while 2.6 million had both.
